In the 1996–97 season, the team reached its first European Cup final. In a thrilling match at the Olympiastadion in Munich, Dortmund faced the reigning champions, Juventus. Karl-Heinz Riedle opened the scoring for Dortmund, firing a shot under goalkeeper Angelo Peruzzi after receiving a cross from Paul Lambert. Riedle then added a second goal with a powerful header from a corner. In the second half, Alessandro Del Piero responded for Juventus with a backheel goal. However, 20-year-old substitute Lars Ricken, a Dortmund native, made an immediate impact, scoring just 16 seconds after entering the match. Ricken chipped the ball over Peruzzi from more than 20 yards out with his first touch. With Zinedine Zidane stifled by Lambert's tight marking, Dortmund secured a 3–1 victory and lifted the trophy. Following this triumph, Hitzfeld’s successful tenure as manager came to an end, with Nevio Scala appointed as his successor.
