Juventus experienced a disappointing season this season, compounded by Alessandro Del Piero's serious knee injury in November 1998. Zinedine Zidane, the hero of France's World Cup victory, struggled to fill Del Piero's shoes and later admitted his shortcomings, attributing them to a lack of focus after winning the World Cup. Under Marcello Lippi's guidance, Juventus' attack faltered unlike the previous seasons. Lippi announced his departure in December 1998, and in February, he was replaced by Carlo Ancelotti. Despite the change, Juventus managed to reach the Champions League semi-finals under Ancelotti's leadership, drawing 1-1 in the first leg against Manchester United. However, their Champions League journey ended with a 3-2 defeat in the second leg. Juventus' Serie A campaign also faltered, finishing seventh, a significant disappointment by their standards. Consequently, they had to settle for a place in the UEFA Cup for the following season.
