During the summer, David Ginola and Les Ferdinand were sold to Tottenham Hotspur. In a pre-season friendly, Alan Shearer suffered a severe ankle injury, sidelining him for half the season. Manager Kenny Dalglish signed goalkeeper Shay Given, midfielder Temur Ketsbaia, striker John Barnes, and veteran striker Ian Rush, the club's oldest signing at age 36. The highlight of the 1997–98 season was Newcastle's UEFA Champions League run, including a memorable 3–2 victory over Barcelona with a hat-trick from Faustino Asprilla. However, the club's Premier League performance declined after Asprilla's departure in January, and even Shearer's return couldn't revive his previous form. Newcastle reached the FA Cup final but lost 2–0 to Arsenal. In March 1998, controversy erupted when chairman Freddie Shepherd and deputy chairman Douglas Hall were filmed in a Spanish brothel making disparaging remarks about Shearer, boasting about exploiting supporters, and insulting the women of Newcastle. Both resigned, and Sir John Hall returned as acting chairman for the rest of the season. Newcastle reached the FA Cup final for the first time in 24 years but lost to Arsenal, who completed the double, allowing Newcastle to enter the 1998–99 Cup Winners' Cup. Dalglish's cautious playing style was unpopular and ineffective, leading to a 13th-place finish, a significant drop from the previous two seasons' runner-up positions, and only 35 league goals scored all season. Despite signing Dietmar Hamann, Nolberto Solano, and Gary Speed, poor transfer deals and a bad start to the 1998–99 season led to Dalglish being sacked.
