As the defending champions, the country didn't need to go through the World Cup qualification process for the tournament in America. Their opening match against Bolivia, returning to the World Cup after 44 years, ended in a narrow 1-0 victory thanks to Klinsmann. In the second match against Spain, Goikoetxea put the Spaniards ahead, but Klinsmann once again came to the rescue, equalizing early in the second half. He also scored twice against South Korea, helping Germany to a 3-0 lead by halftime. Although South Korea fought back to make it 3-2, Germany secured the group win. Coach Vogts sent Stefan Effenberg home for making an obscene gesture towards the German crowd during a match. In the Round of 16 against Belgium, Rudi Völler put Germany ahead after just six minutes, but Georges Grün equalized two minutes later. Klinsmann restored Germany's lead three minutes after that. Völler scored his second goal of the match before halftime. The match could have changed when referee Kurt Röthlisberger didn't award Belgium a penalty for a foul on Josip Weber. Philippe Albert did manage to score in the 90th minute, but it was too late for Belgium. In the quarter-finals, Matthäus scored a penalty against Bulgaria, but Hristo Stoichkov equalized. Yordan Letchkov then scored the winning goal for Bulgaria, meaning Germany failed to reach the World Cup semi-finals for the first time since 1978.
