This season began without key players Danny Blind, who retired, Jari Litmanen, who moved to Barcelona, and Sunday Oliseh and Edwin van der Sar, who joined Juventus. New arrivals included Brian Laudrup, Nikos Machlas (1998 Golden Shoe winner with Vitesse), Cristian Chivu, and returning player Aron Winter from Inter. Ajax had a rough start, losing 3-2 to Feyenoord in the Johan Cruijff Schaal and being knocked out by Roda JC in the KNVB Cup. In the UEFA Cup, they defeated Dukla B.B. and Hapoel Haifa but were eliminated by Mallorca in the round of 16. Midway through the season, Jan Wouters was replaced by Hans Westerhof as head coach. Ajax finished the league in fifth place, 23 points behind champions PSV.
