Anderlecht began the season strongly with a 6-0 victory over KSV Waregem but struggled in the early league weeks, drawing with Antwerp and Sporting Charleroi, allowing rival Mechelen to take the lead. However, the team rebounded with five consecutive wins, including a notable 2-0 victory against Standard Liege, propelling them to first place. Their matchup against Mechelen ended in a scoreless draw. A rough patch followed, with losses to AA Gent and Germinal Ekeren, and another draw with Club Brugge. This allowed Mechelen to regain the lead, temporarily pushing Anderlecht to second. Before the winter break, Anderlecht regained first place with wins over Lierse SK, KSK Beveren, and Club Liege. After the winter break, Anderlecht started strong, earning 18 points from 20, with their only setback against Antwerp. However, a critical loss to Mechelen (0-3) allowed Club Brugge to pull ahead. Brugge continued their dominance, securing the title after defeating STVV, while Anderlecht finished as runners-up. As cup winners, Anderlecht qualified for the 1989/90 European Cup II, easily advancing past Ballymena United. They faced FC Barcelona next, winning the home match 2-0 but losing the return leg 3-2 after extra time. In the semi-finals, they narrowly defeated Dinamo Bucharest to reach their first European final since 1984, facing Sampdoria. In the final, held with a benching of star Luc Nilis, the match ended scoreless after 90 minutes and went into extra time. Vialli scored twice for Sampdoria, leading to a 2-0 defeat for Anderlecht, marking the last time they reached a European final. Nilis expressed disappointment over not starting and later missed selection for the World Cup in Italy.
