In the 1986–87 season, Olympique Marseille finished 2nd in Ligue 1, narrowly missing out on the title to Bordeaux. The team had a strong campaign under manager Gérard Gili, finishing with 60 points, just two behind Bordeaux. Marseille's standout player was Jean-Pierre Papin, who was the team's top scorer with 19 goals. In the following season, 1987–88, Marseille had a mixed performance. They finished 6th in the league with 41 points, showing some inconsistencies throughout the year. Papin continued his strong form, scoring 19 goals, but the team was unable to challenge for the title. This season saw Marseille’s attack struggle at times, and they ended with 49 goals scored and 43 conceded
