During the summer, Real Madrid strengthened their midfield by signing Danish playmaker Michael Laudrup from Barcelona and Argentine Fernando Redondo. They also added right-back Sánchez Flores from Valencia and brought in Argentine head coach Jorge Valdano from CD Tenerife, ending his seven-year retirement from playing. The team adopted a 4–4–2 system with Buyo as goalkeeper. Quique Sánchez Flores replaced the aging Chendo at right-back, with Fernando Hierro and Manolo Sanchís as central defenders, and Mikel Lasa as left-back. Valdano's aggressive midfield included Redondo and Laudrup in the center, Amavisca on the left wing, and Luis Enrique on the right wing, a crucial new role for him. In attack, Zamorano regained form, winning the Pichichi Trophy as the league's top scorer. The season also marked the rise of 17-year-old forward Raúl, who took over from Alfonso and Emilio Butragueño. Financial issues loomed during the season, but on 16 February 1995, Ramon Mendoza narrowly defeated Florentino Pérez in the club's longest-ever Presidential election, thanks to the team's strong league performance. Madrid clinched their 26th league title and first in five years. However, they were less successful in cup competitions, exiting both the Copa del Rey and UEFA Cup in the round of 16 to Valencia and Odense, respectively, with the latter exit particularly embarrassing due to a 0-2 home loss after a 3-2 away victory.
