The 1990–91 was the worst season in Serie A in a over a decade for the club, finishing 9th despite having a striker like Rudi Völler in the team. Nevertheless, Roma did really well in the UEFA Cup. They reached the final where they lost 2–1. Roma bounced back by winning their seventh Coppa Italia, beating Sampdoria with a 3–1 win at home and a draw in the return leg.
