In 1988, Marc Bourrier and the Bleuets secured their first trophy by winning the European Under-21 Championship. The squad featured players born in 1965-1966, several of whom later joined the French senior team, including Bruno Martini, Laurent Blanc, Jocelyn Angloma, Alain Roche, Franck Sauzée, Vincent Guérin, and Éric Cantona. They qualified by topping their group ahead of East Germany. In the quarter-finals, they defeated Italy, winning 2-1 in Nancy and drawing 2-2 in the return match. In the semi-finals against England, France won the first leg 4-2. During the second leg at Highbury, a brace from Cantona helped them secure a 2-2 draw and advance to the final. There, they faced Greece. After a 0-0 draw in the first leg in Athens, the Bleuets triumphed in the second leg in Besançon with a 3-0 victory, featuring a goal from Franck Silvestre and two from Sauzée.
