Canada's victory in the Gold Cup secured them a spot in the 2001 Confederations Cup, highlighted by a notable 0–0 draw against Brazil. They also earned an invitation to the Copa América 2001, but withdrew from the tournament initially due to security concerns, only for it to proceed as scheduled after its reinstatement. Canada's strong performance continued into the 2002 CONCACAF Gold Cup, where they lost to the United States in the semi-finals on penalties but bounced back to defeat South Korea 2–1 in the third-place match. In the following year's Gold Cup, they were eliminated in the group stage on goal difference. Head coach Osieck, pleased with the team's progress, resigned in September 2003, and former player Colin Miller took over as interim coach.
