In the 2005/06 season, SBV Excelsior, a Rotterdam-based club, marked its 44th year of professional football since 1954. After being relegated from the Eredivisie in the 2002-2003 season, Excelsior played in the first division for the third consecutive year. Under new head coach Mario Been, who replaced John Metgod, the team excelled and finished first in the league, seven points ahead of second-placed VVV-Venlo. The title was clinched with a 3-1 victory over VVV in the penultimate match. In the KNVB Cup, Excelsior was eliminated in the second round by NEC Nijmegen, losing 2-5 after previously defeating Sportclub N.E.C. 4-1 in the first round. The top scorer for the season was Brett Holman, an attacking midfielder with 14 goals in 37 league appearances, who moved to NEC Nijmegen at the end of the season to join his former coach Been.
