Between 1982 and 1985, Scotland remained a competitive but turbulent national side, beginning with their appearance at the 1982 World Cup under legendary manager Jock Stein, where they were eliminated in the group stage despite a strong squad. The following years were dominated by qualification matches for the 1986 World Cup, during which Scotland delivered solid performances and positioned themselves well in UEFA Group 7. This period, however, ended in tragedy: during the decisive qualifier against Wales in September 1985, Stein collapsed and died shortly after the final whistle, casting a shadow over Scotland’s successful qualification campaign and marking one of the most emotional moments in the team’s history.
