In the 1990-1991 season, Manchester United continued their success under Alex Ferguson by winning the European Cup Winners' Cup, defeating Barcelona 2-1 in Rotterdam, with Mark Hughes scoring both goals. This victory marked their first European trophy in 23 years and came after their FA Cup win the previous year, ending a five-year trophy drought. English clubs returned to European competitions following the lifting of a ban imposed after the Heysel Stadium disaster in 1985.
Mark Hughes was named PFA Player of the Year, while young winger Lee Sharpe earned PFA Young Player of the Year. Ryan Giggs, hailed as the club's brightest prospect since George Best, signed his professional contract and made significant strides in the first team. Denis Irwin joined from Oldham Athletic, Les Sealey's loan became permanent, and he became the first-choice goalkeeper.
Despite reaching the League Cup final and improving their league standing from the previous season, United finished sixth in the league and were below Manchester City for the first time in over a decade. Their FA Cup defense ended in the Fifth Round with a defeat to Norwich City. Assistant manager Archie Knox resigned, being replaced by Brian Kidd.
It was the final season at Old Trafford for veteran defender Viv Anderson, who was sold to Sheffield Wednesday, while winger Ralph Milne and Colin Gibson departed. Goalkeeper Gary Walsh made his first appearances in three years, and Lee Martin's playing time was limited due to injury. Striker Mark Robins had fewer opportunities and scored five goals despite some promising performances.
