After the 1998 World Cup in France, Guus Hiddink stepped down as the Netherlands' national coach and soon joined Real Madrid. He teamed up with compatriot Clarence Seedorf at Real and welcomed new players like Robert Jarni, Iván Campo, and young talent Samuel Eto'o. However, Eto'o was loaned out a few months later and never made a significant impact at Real. In August 1998, Hiddink's Real Madrid faced Chelsea in the UEFA Super Cup, losing 0-1 due to a late goal by Gustavo Poyet. A few months later, Real Madrid captured their first trophy of the season by defeating Brazil's Vasco da Gama 2-1 in the Intercontinental Cup in December 1998. Hiddink's tenure was short-lived, as he was sacked on 24 February 1999, the day after qualifying for the Copa del Rey semi-finals. He was succeeded by John Toshack, who had managed the club nine years earlier. Under Toshack, Real Madrid suffered a heavy 6-0 defeat to Valencia in the Copa del Rey semi-finals and were knocked out of the Champions League quarter-finals by Dynamo Kiev, led by young striker Andriy Shevchenko. In La Liga, Real Madrid finished as runners-up, trailing Louis van Gaal's FC Barcelona by 11 points.
