During the summer transfer window, Bayern Munich signed Jürgen Klinsmann and Andreas Herzog, with Otto Rehhagel taking over as team manager. Despite being eliminated in the second round of the German Cup by Fortuna Düsseldorf, they excelled in the UEFA Cup. After a 1-0 home loss to Lokomotiv Moscow, Bayern won 5-0 in the return leg, advancing to the round of 16.
