PSG experienced a decline after years of mismanagement. In the summer of 2000, the club invested heavily in new signings, including Nicolas Anelka, Peter Luccin, and Stéphane Dalmat, as part of the "PSG Banlieue" initiative backed by their shareholder Canal+. By 2003, the club faced a significant financial crisis with a deficit of €65 million, prompting Canal+ to dismiss coach Luis Fernandez and president Laurent Perpère, replacing them with Vahid Halilhodžić as the new coach and Francis Graille as president. The team's performance continued to decline, leading to an inevitable split from their owners.

At the beginning of the 21st century, PSG struggled to regain its former glory, despite the magic of Ronaldinho and the goals of Pauleta. The club did secure five additional trophies, including three French Cups (one against arch-rivals Marseille in 2006), a French League Cup, and a UEFA Intertoto Cup. However, PSG became more infamous for navigating a series of high-profile crises rather than consistent success.
