The 1996-1997 season marked the end of PSG's era of success, which had started in 1994, as the club failed to secure any titles. Despite finishing second in the league behind Monaco, PSG reached the final of the Cup Winners' Cup, facing Ronaldo's Barcelona. Unfortunately, Barcelona emerged victorious with a penalty goal. Prior to this, PSG had also suffered a defeat in the UEFA Super Cup, experiencing a heavy 9-2 aggregate loss to Juventus.
