Croatia began their 2002 World Cup qualifying campaign with draws against Belgium and Scotland, which led to head coach Blažević's resignation in October 2000. His successor, Mirko Jozić, guided the team through the remaining qualifiers undefeated. In the group stage of the World Cup, Croatia narrowly lost to Mexico, defeated Italy 2–1, and suffered a 1–0 loss to Ecuador, resulting in their elimination by just one point. This led to Jozić's resignation and the appointment of Otto Barić in July 2002, marking the first time a manager born outside Southeastern Europe led the team. During Barić's tenure, many players from the "golden generation" were gradually replaced by younger talent during the Euro 2004 qualifying rounds. Croatia secured their spot in the tournament with a playoff victory against Slovenia, winning 2–1 on aggregate thanks to Dado Pršo's late goal in the second leg. However, the team was eliminated in the group stage after drawing 0–0 with Switzerland, 2–2 with France, and losing 2–4 to England.
