Olympique de Marseille did not participate in European competitions during the 2000-2001 season. In the summer of 2000, they hired Brazilian coach Abel Braga, known for managing high-profile players like Romario and Edmundo. The club made several signings, including Marcelinho Paraíba, Bruno N'Gotty, and former Ballon d'Or winner Georges Weah, while losing players like Pirès, Dalmat, and Luccin. However, the season started poorly on the field, leading to Braga's dismissal. Off the field, Di Meco criticized Marchand and Robert Louis-Dreyfus for the team's failures. Mayor Jean-Claude Gaudin, worried about fan unrest, pressured RLD to overhaul the management. Di Meco and Marchand resigned in December 2000. RLD then entrusted player agent Jean-Christophe Cano with recruitment, which stirred controversy. Supporters expressed dissatisfaction, leading RLD to appoint Bernard Tapie as sporting director and Pierre Dubiton as financial director. Marseille finished 15th in the league, narrowly avoiding relegation.
