In the 2000–01 season, AC Milan endured a disappointing campaign, culminating in a 6th place finish in Serie A with 49 points. The team heavily relied on the goal-scoring prowess of Ukrainian striker Andriy Shevchenko, who netted 24 goals in the league and 34 in all competitions, preventing them from a complete downfall. Despite a promising start in the Champions League, where Milan topped their group with convincing performances, including a notable 0–2 victory at the Camp Nou against Barcelona, they were ultimately ousted in the second group stage. Their elimination came after failing to secure a victory, only managing a draw in the final group match against Spanish champions Deportivo La Coruña. The disappointment was profound, particularly as the 2001 Champions League final was set to be hosted at the San Siro. This disappointment led to the dismissal of their 1998–99 title-winning coach Alberto Zaccheroni on March 14, 2001, just a day after the draw with Deportivo. Milan legend Cesare Maldini was appointed as caretaker manager until the end of the season by Silvio Berlusconi, the club's owner.
