The season started with a 4-2 loss to Utrecht in the Johan Cruijff Schaal, and Zlatan Ibrahimović moved to Juventus at the end of August. Ajax entered the group stage of the UEFA Champions League but did not advance, securing only a win against Maccabi Tel Aviv and a draw against Bayern Munich, with four defeats against Juventus and Bayern Munich. They continued in the UEFA Cup but were eliminated in the round of 16 by Auxerre, leading to Ronald Koeman's resignation. Danny Blind, a former Ajax defender, took over as coach, guiding the team to the semi-finals of the KNVB Cup (where they were defeated by Willem II) and securing second place in the league, finishing ten points behind champions PSV.
