For the second consecutive season, Athletic Bilbao had to find a new head coach after dismissing Javier Irureta in March 1995. José María Amorrortu, usually in charge of Athletic Bilbao B, took over temporarily until the season's end. In July, Dragoslav Stepanović, previously the coach of Bayer Leverkusen, was appointed as the permanent replacement. Stepanović's tenure started promisingly with a 4–0 victory over Racing Santander on the opening day of their La Liga campaign. However, by January, Athletic was eliminated in the Copa del Rey's last sixteen by Real Zaragoza. By mid-April, the team had won just eight of their first 31 games and was 15th in the league, only four points clear of the relegation playoff zone. Following a 1–0 home defeat by Valencia on 17 March, Bilbao decided to replace Stepanović. Amorrortu stepped in again until the end of the season. Although he couldn't significantly turn around the team's performance, they did secure three more wins and finished safely in 15th place. At the season's end, Frenchman Luis Fernández, formerly of Paris Saint-Germain, was appointed as the new permanent head coach.
