Stoichkov became an international star at Barcelona, becoming the first Bulgarian to win the European Cup in 1992. Bulgaria's qualification for the 1994 World Cup began with a 2-0 win over France but was followed by several poor results, putting them behind Sweden and France. After a 1-1 home draw against Sweden, Bulgaria needed a miracle to qualify. This miracle occurred when France lost 3-2 to Israel, and Bulgaria then needed to win in Paris. In a dramatic finish, Emile Kostadinov scored the winning goal in the final minute, securing Bulgaria's place in the World Cup. The World Cup in the United States started poorly for Bulgaria with a 3-0 loss to Nigeria. However, they secured their first World Cup victory with a 4-0 win over Greece. In the final group match, they defeated Argentina 2-0 with goals from Stoichkov and Sirakov, after Argentina lost Maradona due to a doping violation. Bulgaria advanced to the quarter-finals by defeating Mexico on penalties, with Yordan Letchkov scoring the decisive penalty. In the quarter-final against Germany, Bulgaria came from behind to win 2-1 with goals from Stoichkov and Letchkov. However, in the semi-final against Italy, they were outplayed and lost 2-1, with Stoichkov scoring a penalty. The third-place match against Sweden ended in a 4-0 defeat, making the travel from New York to Los Angeles in three days a significant challenge. Stoichkov ended the tournament as the joint top scorer with six goals and was named European Footballer of the Year.
