Chelsea started the season strong, ranking second after 19 games, but then suffered a dramatic decline, going 12 matches without a win. This poor run dropped Chelsea to 12th place, shifting their focus from a title challenge to avoiding relegation. As a result, manager Ian Porterfield was dismissed on 15 February, becoming the first manager sacked in the new Premier League. He was succeeded by David Webb, who had famously scored the winning goal in the 1970 FA Cup Final for Chelsea. Webb guided the team to safety, but his contract was not renewed by the board. Instead, they appointed former Tottenham legend Glenn Hoddle, who had recently led Swindon Town to their first-ever top-flight campaign, as player-manager.
The club finished the season with 56 points, with a record of 14 wins, 14 draws, and 14 losses. Finishing 11th out of 22 teams marked Chelsea's first top-half finish since coming 5th in the 1989–90 season. Conceding only 54 goals, Chelsea achieved their best defensive record in the top flight, a record they would surpass the following season. In the FA Cup, Chelsea was eliminated in the third round, losing 2–1 to Middlesbrough at Ayresome Park.
