After the Club World Cup, América advanced to the playoffs of the Clausura 2007, defeating Atlas and Guadalajara in the quarterfinals and semifinals, respectively. They faced Pachuca in the final and finished as runners-up. In the Apertura 2007, after a poor start, coach Luis Fernando Tena was replaced by Daniel Brailovsky. América finished third in their group and sixth overall. They played Morelia for the last playoff spot, losing 3–0 in the first leg and winning 1–0 in the second leg, resulting in their elimination from the competition. América also competed in the Copa Sudamericana, reaching the finals against Arsenal de Sarandí of Argentina. They lost the first leg 3–2 at Estadio Azteca and won the second leg 2–1 in Argentina. With an aggregate score of 4–4, Arsenal won the championship due to the away goals rule América finished 2007 ranked tenth in the IFFHS's Club World Rankings, becoming the first Mexican club to reach the top ten.
