Founded in 1992, FCK emerged as an amalgamation of Kjøbenhavns Boldklub and Boldklubben 1903, with the former dating back to 1876, making it the oldest club in Continental Europe. F.C. Copenhagen boasts a record 15 Danish Football Championships and 9 Danish Cups. The club made its mark on the European stage in 1999, facing English side Chelsea in the second round of the UEFA Cup Winners' Cup. In the first leg at Stamford Bridge, Bjarne Goldbæk put Copenhagen ahead nine minutes from time, but Chelsea equalized in the dying moments. Chelsea secured victory in the second leg at Parken with a goal from Danish player Brian Laudrup, eliminating FCK. It was revealed in the post-match press conference that Laudrup would join Copenhagen in January 1999, with Goldbæk moving to Chelsea. Despite Laudrup's four-time Danish Player of the Year accolades, Copenhagen struggled in the 1998–99 Superliga season, finishing seventh. Laudrup's stint at the club lasted only six months before he signed with Ajax.
