Croatia commenced their journey to qualify for the 1998 World Cup with a triumph over Ukraine in the playoffs. In the group stage, they conquered both Jamaica and Japan but faced defeat against Argentina, nevertheless, progressing to the knockout phase alongside them. Their 1–0 victory against Romania propelled Croatia into the quarter-finals, where they encountered Germany. Croatia emerged victorious with a 3–0 scoreline, courtesy of goals from Robert Jarni, Goran Vlaović, and Davor Šuker, following Christian Wörns' dismissal. This historic win secured their berth in the semi-finals, marking their first appearance in this stage against the hosts, France. Despite taking the lead in the second half through Davor Šuker after an assist from Aljoša Asanović, Croatia succumbed to France's equalizer and subsequent winning goal by defender Lilian Thuram, resulting in a 2–1 defeat. Undeterred, Croatia went on to clinch the bronze medal in the third-place playoff, triumphing over the Netherlands with a 2–1 scoreline, thereby securing their inaugural World Cup medal. Davor Šuker's outstanding performance, netting six goals in seven games, earned him the Golden Shoe award. Croatia's remarkable achievements during the late 1990s propelled them to the prestigious third position in the FIFA World Rankings by January 1999.
