In UEFA Euro 1996, Croatia competed in Group D alongside Portugal, Denmark, and Turkey. They finished second in the group, advancing to the quarter-finals. Croatia started with a 1-0 victory over Turkey, thanks to a late goal from Goran Vlaović. Their most impressive performance came in a 3-0 win against Denmark, where Davor Šuker scored twice, including a stunning chip over Peter Schmeichel. However, they lost 3-0 to Portugal in their final group match. In the quarter-finals, Croatia faced Germany but were eliminated after a 2-1 defeat, despite Šuker scoring again.
