In the 1998 FIFA World Cup, Croatia made a stunning debut, finishing third in their first-ever tournament appearance. Led by Miroslav Blažević, they advanced from the group stage with wins over Jamaica (3-1) and Japan (1-0) before losing to Argentina (0-1). Croatia then defeated Romania (1-0) in the round of 16 and stunned Germany (3-0) in the quarter-finals. Their dream run ended in the semi-finals against France (1-2), but they secured third place with a 2-1 victory over the Netherlands. Davor Šuker won the Golden Boot, scoring six goals in the tournament.
