In 1995, Denmark secured its second international trophy by winning the Confederation Cup in Saudi Arabia, defeating Argentina 2-0 in the final with goals from Michael Laudrup and Peter Rasmussen. During the qualification for the 1996 European Championship (EC), Denmark finished five points behind Spain but secured second place and a seeded position thanks to two victories over Belgium. However, the 1996 EC proved disappointing for Denmark. After a 1-1 draw with Portugal and a 3-0 loss to Croatia, Denmark's progression depended on the Portugal-Croatia match. Croatia, already qualified, fielded their second team, resulting in a 3-0 win for Portugal. Despite Denmark's 3-0 victory over Turkey, they were eliminated and lost their European title. Coach Møller Nielsen resigned following heavy criticism of his defensive tactics.
