In 1996, during the South American qualifiers for the 1998 World Cup in France, the Ecuadorian team featured numerous national football stars, including Luis Capurro, Álex Aguinaga, Eduardo Hurtado, Ángel Fernández, Agustín Delgado, and Ariel Graziani. On April 24, 1996, the first matchday began with Ecuador hosting Peru at the Estadio Monumental Isidro Romero. The Tricolor triumphed with a 4-1 victory over the Inca team, thanks to a brace from Eduardo Hurtado in the 54th and 88th minutes, and additional goals from Máximo Tenorio in the 65th minute and José Gavica in the 78th minute. Roberto Palacios scored for Peru in the 62nd minute. On the second matchday, Ecuador hosted Argentina at the Estadio Olímpico Atahualpa in Quito, marking the first official match the Tricolor played in this stadium. The match ended in a victory for Ecuador, echoing a previous Copa América encounter where Chile had eliminated Uruguay in Santiago. However, Uruguay took revenge by defeating the reigning champions of America 3-0, with goals from Diego Godín, Álvaro Pereira, and Martín Cáceres, putting Uruguay second in the standings with 9 points, behind leaders Ecuador. Despite coming within four points of qualifying, Ecuador ultimately fell short. A historic moment occurred when Ecuador defeated Argentina for the first time in a World Cup qualifier in Quito.
