Espanyol, a Spanish football club, received the royal privilege to use the title "Re(i)al" in its name from King Alfonso XIII in 1912. Under Francisco Franco's dictatorship, when the Catalan language was banned, the club was known as Real Club Deportivo Español. It wasn't until 1995, after Franco's death, that the club changed its name to Espanyol. Interestingly, "Espanyol" means 'Spanish' but is written in Catalan, with the letter 'ñ' represented as 'ny'. Despite this, the word 'Deportiu' in the club name remains unchanged, although it would typically be 'Esportiu' in Catalan. The club reached the UEFA Cup final twice, both times losing on penalties. In 1988, they won 3-0 against Bayer 04 Leverkusen in Barcelona but lost by the same margin in Germany, leading to a penalty shootout defeat. Similarly, in 2007, they drew 1-1 with Sevilla FC before losing on penalties again after extra time ended in a 2-2 draw.
