Excelsior’s 1999–00 season was a thrilling ride in the Dutch Eerste Divisie. Under manager Adrie Koster, the Rotterdam club finished 4th in the league, scoring an impressive 70 goals across 34 matches. Despite their strong campaign, they fell short of promotion after finishing 3rd in the play-offs. In the KNVB Beker, Excelsior reached the Round of 16, where they were narrowly eliminated by NEC. The team’s attacking firepower was led by David Connolly, who netted 29 league goals, plus additional strikes in the cup and play-offs. Supporting him were Geert den Ouden and Patrick Mtiliga, who added crucial goals and flair. Excelsior’s 2000–01 season was a strong campaign in the Dutch Eerste Divisie. Under manager Adrie Koster, the club finished 2nd in the league with 66 points, scoring a league-high 89 goals in 34 matches. Their attacking style was relentless, with Czech forward Jaromír Šimr leading the scoring charts with 17 goals, supported by contributions from David Connolly, Patrick Mtiliga, and Thomas Buffel. In the KNVB Beker, Excelsior reached the Round of 16, where they were eliminated by AZ Alkmaar. The team played their home matches at Van Donge & De Roo Stadion, and their exciting brand of football earned them a spot in the promotion play-offs, though they ultimately missed out on promotion to the Eredivisie.
