In the 1999/2000 season, FC Groningen, now in their 29th year of Dutch professional football, played in the First Division for the second consecutive season. Under coach Jan van Dijk, the team finished third in the league and qualified for the promotion playoffs. At home, Groningen won every match except against BV Veendam. They successfully navigated the promotion playoffs, defeating FC Emmen, MVV, and Heracles Almelo to return to the Eredivisie. However, in the cup tournament, they were eliminated in the first round by Dordrecht ’90, who won 5-0.
