For the 1990/91 season, Erich Rutemöller stepped in as the new coach, bringing in notable players such as Maurice "Mucki" Banach and Henrik Andersen. In the UEFA Cup, FC Köln triumphed over IFK Norrköping and Internacionál Bratislava but was narrowly eliminated in the round of 16 by Atalanta Bergamo (1:1, 0:1). In the Bundesliga, FC Köln finished in the top third of the table, securing seventh place. However, significant home defeats against VfB Stuttgart and champions 1. FC Kaiserslautern meant they just missed qualifying for the 1991/92 UEFA Cup. In the 1990/91 DFB Cup, FC Köln reached the final for the last time to date, facing SV Werder Bremen. Banach equalized Bremen's lead, but with no goals in extra time, the match proceeded to a penalty shoot-out. Andrzej Rudy and Pierre Littbarski missed their penalties for Köln, while Klaus Allofs, a former Köln player, scored for Werder, securing Bremen's victory (see also: Match data for the 1991 DFB Cup final).
