In the 1999/2000 season, FC Cologne exhibited a remarkable transformation, dominating the league and reclaiming their spot in the Bundesliga as champions of the second division. Key signings such as Markus Kurth, Moses Sichone, and Matthias Scherz, who all accumulated over 100 appearances for FC, played pivotal roles in this success. Scherz notably featured in 270 league games for FC, scoring 63 goals in the process. However, their journey in the DFB Cup was cut short as they were eliminated in the round of 16 by VfB Stuttgart. The club's moniker "Die Geißböcke" (The Billy Goats) derives from their mascot, a male goat named Hennes, in honor of the esteemed FC player and former manager Hennes Weisweiler. The original Hennes was gifted to the club as a Cologne carnival prank by a circus entrepreneur. The current mascot, Hennes IX, assumed the role on August 1, 2019, following the retirement of Hennes VIII due to old age.
