Feyenoord’s 1987–88 season was a mixed campaign under manager Rinus Israël. The club finished 6th in the Eredivisie, winning 14 of their 34 matches and scoring 63 goals. Despite flashes of attacking brilliance—including an 8–2 win over DS '79 and a 7–2 thrashing of AZ—defensive inconsistency kept them from challenging for the top spots. In Europe, they reached the second round of the UEFA Cup, eliminating Spora Luxembourg before falling to Aberdeen. The squad featured key contributions from René Hofman, Mario Been, and André Hoekstra, while Australian striker Dave Mitchell added firepower up front. The following season saw Feyenoord improve under new manager Rob Jacobs, finishing 4th in the Eredivisie with a more balanced record and a stronger goal difference. The team netted 66 goals, with Martin van Geel leading the scoring charts and new signings like Włodzimierz Smolarek and John Metgod making an immediate impact. Feyenoord also reached the Round of 16 in the KNVB Beker, and their performances at De Kuip were often thrilling, including a 5–0 win over Willem II and a 3–2 derby victory against Sparta. Midfielders Ton Lokhoff and Marcel Brands added creativity and control, while veterans like Sjaak Troost anchored the defense.
