Fiorentina experienced their first relegation to Serie B in fifty-five years. In the 1993-1994 season, the Cecchi Gori family retained key players with the aim of an immediate return to Serie A. Claudio Ranieri, newly arrived from Napoli, was appointed as coach, promoting promising talents like goalkeeper Francesco Toldo and forwards Anselmo Robbiati and Francesco Flachi to the first team. The squad dominated Serie B, amassing 50 points and securing promotion alongside Bari, Brescia, and Padova. However, their Coppa Italia journey ended in the round of 16 against Venezia. Gabriel Batistuta emerged as Fiorentina's top scorer with 16 goals. The season also marked the passing of 'Marione' Cecchi Gori on November 5, 1993. His son Vittorio took over the club's leadership, with Valeria, his mother, as honorary president. Vittorio honored his father's memory by organizing a summer triangular tournament named after him, featuring Fiorentina and other Italian or international teams.
