In 1989, Grêmio won the inaugural Copa do Brasil, thrashing Flamengo 6-1 in the semi-finals and defeating Sport in the final. This victory qualified them for the CONMEBOL Libertadores, but they were eliminated in the group stage. After finishing third in 1990, Grêmio ended in the penultimate place in 1991, leading to their first relegation. They reached the Copa do Brasil final again that year but lost to Criciúma, which allowed them to compete in the Copa CONMEBOL, where they were eliminated in the quarterfinals by El Nacional of Ecuador. Grêmio finished ninth in Série B but were promoted in 1993 due to the expansion of Série A to 32 teams. Upon their return, they finished 11th and reached the cup final once more, losing to Cruzeiro.
