With signings as Robert Carlos, Zannetti and Paul Inter exepected a succesful season. The opposite became true, Inter finished seventh in the league. In the end, this away shirt turned out to be the only big highlight of the season. Inter Milan finished 7th in the Italian league and just qualified for the UEFA Cup. This gave Milan the opportunity to reach the final of the European tournament. The final was played in two matches against Schalke 04. The first match was lost 1-0 in Gelsenkirchen, after which Milan won 1-0 thanks to a goal from Zamora. Unfortunately, Inter had a dramatic penalty shootout, losing the final 4-1.
