Duisburg played at the highest level in Germany until 1983. In the mid-1980s, the club fared less well, relegating from the Bundesliga. In this jersey, the second place in the second level was achieved, thus forcing promotion to the highest level again. Duisburg finished directly 9th in 1994. For much of the 1990s, the club still played in the Bundesliga.
