Since the appointment of none other than Arsene Wenger as coach in the 1990s, the club became a candidate for the championship. Wenger won the Emperor's Cup in 1995 in Nagoya, which gave the club its first major national prize. In 96, the club finished second in the J-League, but it was not until 2010 that Nagoya Grampus would celebrate its first championship in the J-League.
