The Magpies had one of the most successful seasons of their history in the 1996 shirt. Newcastle United reached the quarter finals of the UEFA Cup, eliminated by A.S. Monaco. Like the year before, they finished second in the premier league and reached European football again. This was also the debut season of legend Alan Shearer. He became directly the Premier League's top scorer with 25 goals. In the seasons between 1997 and 1999, Newcastle was less successful. In 1998 Newcastle played in the Champions League, unfortunately they did not passed the group stage where they defeated Barcalona 3-2 thanks to a Hattrick of Faustino Asprilla. In the 1998-1999 season the Magpies got legend Ruud Gullit as coach. Unfortunately this did not lead to success, Newcastle United ended in a mediocre 13th place like the previous season.
