In the 2000–01 season, Parma Associazione Calcio had a somewhat successful campaign, securing a spot in the UEFA Champions League. However, they faced disappointment by losing the Coppa Italia final and exiting the UEFA Cup earlier than desired, leading to the departure of coach Alberto Malesani at season's end. This season also marked the departure of star striker Hernán Crespo, who moved to Lazio after four years with Parma. Although Sérgio Conçeicão and Matías Almeyda joined from Lazio, they were midfielders, leaving Parma facing a potential shortage of strikers. Despite Marco Di Vaio's 15 goals, Márcio Amoroso's underwhelming performance led to his transfer to Borussia Dortmund in the summer of 2001. Furthermore, the season saw the departure of young goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon and defender Lilian Thuram, who were both sold to Juventus in the summer transfer window. Their absence was keenly felt in the subsequent 2001–02 season. Notably, 2001 stands as the last time Parma qualified for the Champions League.
