Portsmouth’s 1991–92 season under Jim Smith marked a resurgence, with the club finishing 9th in the Second Division and reaching the FA Cup semi-finals for the first time since 1939. Their cup run included wins over Exeter, Leyton Orient, Middlesbrough, and Nottingham Forest before a heartbreaking penalty shootout loss to Liverpool. In the league, Guy Whittingham led the scoring with 13 goals, while Darren Anderton emerged as a rising star before his transfer to Tottenham. The 1992–93 campaign was even more dramatic. Competing in the newly renamed First Division, Pompey finished 3rd, level on points with West Ham but missing automatic promotion on goal difference. They entered the play-offs but were eliminated by Leicester City. Whittingham was unstoppable, scoring 48 goals in all competitions, one of the highest tallies in English football history. The squad, featuring Paul Walsh, Alan McLoughlin, and Kit Symons, played attacking football that thrilled fans at Fratton Park and nearly propelled the club into the Premier League.
