In the summer, Valencia appointed Luis Aragonés as their new manager. During the 1995–96 La Liga season, Valencia mounted a serious title challenge for the first time since the late 1970s. From January to March, the team had a string of strong performances, reaching second place in the table, highlighted by a 4–1 victory over Johan Cruyff's FC Barcelona. Although their form dipped in April, making the title race seem lost, they regained momentum in May. Notably, their 2–3 win against Atlético de Madrid at the Vicente Calderón Stadium in April was a standout moment. Despite not winning the league, the club’s fans and the province showed great appreciation for the team's efforts.
