During the qualifying round for the European Championship, Denmark scored only four goals in six matches, securing three 1-0 victories. The team advanced thanks to favorable results from their rivals, with Czechoslovakia losing 3-0 to Finland and Wales losing a decisive match against the Czechs. However, the tournament itself was disappointing for Denmark, as they lost all three matches: 3-2 to Spain, 2-0 to West Germany, and 2-0 to Italy. After the tournament, Morten Olsen and Frank Arnesen retired from the national team, while Søren Lerby and Elkjær Larsen ended the tournament on the bench. Despite these setbacks, their distinctive Hummel jerseys became an iconic symbol of the Danish team.
