The 1996-1997 season was a mixed one for Club Brugge. Under the management of Hugo Broos, the team finished second in the Belgian First Division, narrowly missing out on the title to Lierse SK. In European competitions, Club Brugge was eliminated in the UEFA Champions League qualifiers by Steaua Bucharest but made it to the Round of 16 in the UEFA Cup before being knocked out by Schalke 04. Domestically, they won the Belgian Super Cup by defeating Cercle Brugge. Key players included Robert Špehar, who was the top scorer, and Franky Van der Elst, who won the Belgian Golden Shoe.
