After the departures of Tomasson and Hernán Crespo, AC Milan signed several new players in the summer of 2005: young striker Alberto Gilardino, Czech winger Marek Jankulovski, goalkeeper Željko Kalac, Swiss midfielder Johann Vogel, and forward Christian Vieri from Inter, who was later sold to Monaco and replaced by Brazilian Márcio Amoroso. Christian Abbiati and Cristian Brocchi were loaned out to Juventus and Fiorentina, respectively, while Pancaro and Dhorasoo left permanently. Milan had a strong home performance in the league, achieving 18 wins and one draw (1-1 against Sampdoria), equaling the record set by Grande Torino in 1948-1949. They inflicted Juventus's only league defeat of the season (3-1 at San Siro on 29 October 2005) but lost the derby to Inter, a first since March 2002. Milan finished the season with 88 points, their highest since the introduction of the single-round system, reducing their deficit to Juventus from 14 points to 3. However, following the Italian football scandal verdicts, Juventus's Scudetto was revoked and awarded to Inter, while Milan was penalized 30 points, dropping them from second to third with 58 points. Despite this, Milan qualified for the 2006-2007 Champions League preliminaries. In the Coppa Italia, Milan was eliminated in the quarter-finals by Palermo after defeating Brescia in the round of 16. In the Champions League, Milan topped their group, then eliminated Bayern Munich in the round of 16 (4-1 on aggregate). They ousted Lyon in the quarter-finals (0-0 in France, 3-1 at San Siro) with crucial goals from Inzaghi and Ševčenko. Ševčenko became the Champions League's all-time top scorer but was later sold to Chelsea after the season. Milan reached the semi-finals but were eliminated by Barcelona, who won 1-0 at San Siro and drew 0-0 at Camp Nou.
